You’ve secured your ideal real estate in Canberra and now you’re looking forward to moving in.  You’ll need to begin preparing for your move, which ranges from utility connections to packing and organising moving companies for the big day – but where do you start?

You should begin by considering what services you will need, such as truck hire, removalists, cleaners, and so on.  Once the moving date is set, ensure everything is booked and organised by that date.

One of the most important things to consider is organising your utility connections and disconnections. This should be organised two weeks before your move, as you don’t want to be left without electricity on the day you move.  As it may take a few days for some connections to activate, ensure you prioritise this task to avoid any extra hassle.

Something that is often overlooked or left to the last minute is notifying companies of your change of address.  Important companies to contact are the Australian Post, your bank, and water, electricity and phone companies to avoid lost mail or late bills.  A good tip is to organise a few weeks in advance to have your mail redirected to your new address, before you have the chance to forget.  Australia Post allows you to set a start date for redirection.
